You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
Deuteronomy 6:7
Scripture: John 13:14-17: If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I gave you an example that you also should do as I did to you. Truly, truly, I say to you, a slave is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him. If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them.
Quick Commentary: This occurred on the night that Jesus would be betrayed and delivered into the hands of the Roman soldiers. Jesus left His disciples with a beautiful example to follow. He washed His disciples’ feet as an act of extraordinary humility. God incarnate stooping down to serve the very people that He was going to the cross to save.
Main Thoughts: Since Jesus is our example to follow (Ephesians 5:1), then we should serve one another as well. We are to choose the path of humility like our Lord showed us.
Questions To Discuss: Who do I need to serve? How can I serve others? What am I putting in my mind? Things that lead to humility or things that lead to pride? Am I taking in the truth of God by having my mind renewed by the Word of God?
Main Things To Pray For Each Other: Pray for wisdom to see the needs of others and pray for compassion to meet those needs when possible. Pray for a servant’s heart.
Suggested Prayer: God, we praise You for sending Your Son to this earth so long ago. We ask You to help us imitate Christ as we live in this world that is so full of hatred and selfishness. Help us we pray, amen.
