You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.
Deuteronomy 6:7
Scripture: Matthew 18:1-3: At that time the disciples came to Jesus and said, “Who then is greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” 2 And He called a child to Himself and set him before them, 3 and said, “Truly I say to you, unless you are converted and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
Matthew 19:13-14: Then some children were brought to Him so that He might lay His hands on them and pray; and the disciples rebuked them. 14 But Jesus said, “Let the children alone, and do not hinder them from coming to Me; for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”
Main Thoughts: In Jesus’ day, children had few rights. They were totally dependent on others for their wellbeing and sustenance. Society, in that day, didn’t celebrate children to the same extent that we do today. As a result, the words of Jesus on that day were especially surprising. Jesus was clearly making the connection that we have to come to Him in a spirit of dependency and need. We need Him for all things. We should long to simply be with Him.
Question To Discuss: Are we dependent on Christ? Or are we self-sufficient in life? What are some areas that we struggle with trying to live independently of God?
Main Things To Pray For Each Other: Pray that we will recognize our need for Him in all things. Pray that we will not try to live life or certain areas of our lives in an arrogant, self-sufficient manner. Pray we will know of our need for Him in all parts of our lives.
Suggested Prayer: God, we thank You that You love us and desire to be with us. We pray that we will love You and long to be with You. Help us to clearly understand our need for You in every area of our lives. And help us to point other to You.
